Trained as a medical doctor and specialising in psychiatry, Dr Blair-West has worked as a psychotherapist for 20 years and now sub-specialises in the treatment of obesity. His fascination is the way the human mind develops deep emotional attachments to food and then sabotages weight loss if they are not managed.
Dr Blair-West is a Life Fellow of the Obesity Prevention & Treatment Society and in 2009 was elected as the President. He has delivered papers on the clinical management of obesity to a number of organisations, including the International Congress on Obesity, the Innovations in the Prevention and Management of Obesity conference, the Diabetes New Zealand Conference, and the Australian Diabetes Educators Conference.
Dr Blair-West is the author of the best-selling book, Weight Loss for Food Lovers: Understanding our minds and why we sabotage our weight loss, which makes sense of the psychology of weight loss in simple terms. Now in its third edition, the book is published in Australia, New Zealand, the UK and throughout Europe, and soon in China.
During his time as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland, Dr Blair-West published in peak international journals and presented at international conferences on health care delivery and suicide in depression. He continues to practice in his clinic in Brisbane, Australia, working with people both individually as well as in groups.
